New Prometheus poster explodes online

[brightcove]1518899591001[/brightcove]

We were only saying yesterday that we're getting a bit fed up of seeing too much from Prometheus, but today we eat our words.

Because, as far as we're concerned, the Fox marketing team can release as many beautiful posters as they want.

The new one-sheet below manages the trick of taking a moment we've already seen in a trailer, and freezing it in time to make it look instantly iconic.

It also follows the 2012 trend of showing a star with his back to the audience (we assume that's Michael Fassbender engaging his curiosity circuits to gaze in awe at the massive explosion his colleagues are fleeing from) whilst still giving us forward-facing gawps at Noomi Rapace and Chalize Theron scrambling to safety.

Prometheus opens on 1 June. We absolutely cannot wait.

Wes Anderson and cast attend Moonrise Kingdom press conference

Moonrise Kingdom opened the Cannes film festival in fine style last night, with the opening night gala preceded by a star-studded press-conference attended by Wes Anderson and his entire cast.

A key theme of the high-spirited conference was just how much fun it is to work on a Wes Anderson production. "It’s clearly a family that has been created over the years," said Tilda Swinton. "I felt like I had been invited to a wedding and one that I was really happy to be invited to."

There was plenty of praise for Anderson's directing style, with newcomer Bruce Willis particularly effusive about the filmmaker. "I found it really refreshing to be directed and to be asked to perform the part in a really specific way," he said. "In a world where on a lot of films you don't rehearse and nobody really talks to you about it, it was so nice to be asked to work in a certain way."

Fellow A-lister Ed Norton also enjoyed the community feel of the shoot. "All of us started by reading about Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre players… there's a romance to that," he said. "As an actor I used to dream about how fun it would be to be a part of a troupe like that. Wes has put one together."

Unsurprisingly however, it was Bill Murray who stole the show, musing about how they could have hired Van Damme if Willis wasn't available, before going on to describe the general feeling of working on an Anderson project.

"These are what you call ‘art films’,” began Murray. “I don’t know if you know what those are, but they’re films where you work very, very long hours for no money. All we get is this trip to Cannes. That’s it. But fortunately we’ve saved from other jobs we’ve worked on, so we can [afford to] work with Wes over and over again."

Moonrise Kingdom opens in the UK on 25 May 2012.

Eli Roth to direct intense horror The Green Inferno

[brightcove]970159514001[/brightcove]

Eli Roth is to return to directing after a five year absence. He will helm The Green Inferno, a horror project he's been developing during his time off.

Not much is known about The Green Inferno's plot, but Roth has promised it will be "Daring and terrifying," and "The scariest and most intense film I have made to date."

Roth said: “I’ve had an amazing few years producing, writing and acting, and am very excited to get back in the director’s chair. I’ve been working on this idea for several years, and was inspired by filming in Chile and cannot wait to get back.”

“Worldview backs my vision and believes in me, and is giving me the support I need and the freedom to take risks. I want to audiences worldwide to feel my return to directing was worth the wait.”

Eli last picked up a camera to help his old mate Quentin Tarantino, by shooting the Nation's Pride bits of Inglourious Basterds. But his last full feature was Hostel 2, way back in 2007.

Since then Roth has proven himself to be an impressive producer, helping found footage possession flick The Last Exorcism to the big screen, and on its way to becoming a fully fledged franchise.

Production on The Green Inferno will begin at the end of the year, in Peru and Chile.

First poster lands for Skyfall

Skyfall has released a first official poster, and a beautifully minimalist one it is too, featuring an unsmiling Daniel Craig in the classic gun-barrel framing.

The new poster is very much in keeping with the gritty, back to basics Bond portrayed by Craig since Casino Royale, dispensing with the frills to ensure that 007 remains the star of the show.

No cackling villains on hand here then, nor Javier Bardem's shocking blonde mop. Just a Double-O agent packing a pistol and preparing for business.

That said, Bond's lighter side will come to the surface in the film itself, with Craig promising that the script will be peppered with a few of 007's trademark one-liners. “You have to have a script that has the bones of comedy,” said Craig. “Comedy in Bond films, for me, comes out of the situations people get into."

"They're exciting, and hopefully heart-stopping," he continues, "and the comedy comes out of one-liners and things. There's a lightness of touch in the writing that's not been as evident in the past two."

Skyfall
will open in the UK on 26 October 2012. You can check out the poster in full, below...

Watch a new featurette for The Amazing Spider-Man

The Amazing Spider-Man has released a new featurette turning the spotlight on director Marc Webb, who gives an insight into the various challenges of bringing such a massive project to the big screen.

Webb talks of his excitement at watching the bare bones of the script come to life in the hands of his talented cast, with a new clip of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone illustrating the point nicely. Their sparky chemistry already looks to be one of the highlights of the film.

There's also a brief look at a building-swinging scene that looks as exhilarating as any of the "Spidey takes flight" sequences in Sam Raimi's trilogy.  We'd imagine the 3D will come into its own during that particular moment.

Take a look at the new featurette, below…

Throughout this marketing campaign, Webb has seemed unusually enthusiastic and open about the project. While some directors are more concerned with keeping the film's secrets, Webb has been only too happy to talk of his love for the character, a refreshing approach that bodes well for the finished article.

The Amazing Spider-Man opens in the UK on 4 July 2012. There's plenty more super-hero in this summer yet...

James Badge Dale joins Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3 has added another new addition to its growing ensemble, with James Badge Dale the latest star to join the superhero sequel's increasingly starry cast.

The star of TV's The Pacific will play Eric Savin, a character Iron Man fans will remember well from the comics. A Lieutenant Colonel who takes charge of Project: Ultra in the original stories, Savin is perhaps best known for the landmine blast that took off one of his legs.

Resurrected as a cyborg via cybernetic surgery, Savin becomes the cyborg Coldblood, a skilled mercenary for hire. Whether or not that transformation will take place in Iron Man 3 remains to be seen. Perhaps Marvel are simply setting up the character for films further down the track…

What we do know is that the film's storyline will draw heavily upon Warren Ellis' Extremis series, in which Tony Stark finds his latest suit targeted by a virus designed to sabotage its new nanotechnology upgrades.

Directed by Shane Black and featuring a whole host of new cast members including Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall, Iron Man 3 will open in the UK on 3 May 2013. We can hardly wait...

New details for Blade Runner sequel

While promotional material for Prometheus has come in waves over the last few months, it's all gone a bit quiet over Ridley Scott's other big sci-fi project, the potential sequel to Blade Runner.

However, new details have emerged today, chief of which is the news that original Blade Runner screenwriter Hampton Fancher is currently in talks to return for round two.

An official press release confirms that Fancher is in discussions to pen a sequel, with Scott already in place to fill the director's chair for a second time.

"The filmmakers are also revealing for the first time that the much-anticipated project is intended to be a sequel to the renowned original," says the blurb. "The filmmakers would reveal only that the new story will take place some years after the first film concluded."

Still more intriguing is the news that the sequel will boast a female lead. "We have a very good take on it," said Sir Ridley himself of the forthcoming sequel, "and we'll definitely be featuring a female protagonist."

Whether or not Harrison Ford will also return remains unclear, with Scott having played down rumours that the star had been in talks to take the lead. However, there's still plenty of time for that to change, with filming unlikely to begin until 2013. Never say never, eh Harrison?

Release date confirmed for 3D Sin City 2

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For has released a glut of new information, including an official release date, confirmation of Jessica Alba's return and the fact that the film will be presented in 3D.

First things first, and that all-important release date has been confirmed as 4 October 2013. That's when the film will open in the US, with the UK date likely to follow in short order.

Next, we have confirmation that Jessica Alba will join Mickey Rourke in the long-awaited sequel, with both stars named in an official press release. Rosario Dawson is also expected to reappear, although her name is conspicuous by its absence in the official blurb.

What is included is the news that the film will be presented in 3D, lending a new element to the distinctive look of the first film.

"The original Sin City broke new ground with its iconic stylish look and grossed over $160 million worldwide," explains the release. "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For will not only bring fans back to the world that Rodriguez and Miller created, but will also add a new dimension by bringing their unique visual style to life in 3D."

Top dimension-based pun there. More importantly however, the date is set, and things are moving forward. Let the stylised slaughter begin!

Karen Gillan talks movie debut and Doctor Who exit

Doctor Who star Karen Gillan has been chatting to Total Film about her debut as a leading lady – and her departure from the sci-fi series.

The Amy Pond actress is currently in Cannes to promote her upcoming role in Glasgow-set indie-com Not Another Happy Ending.

“I play a successful writer called Jane Lockhart,” Gillan told us. “Who writes best when she’s unhappy. She’s feeling good about her life and therefore can’t write her next novel, so her publisher Tom goes on a secret mission to make her unhappy to get the book written.”

Filming’s due to start in Glasgow in July, co-starring Emun Elliott (Game Of Thrones), with John McKay (who directed Gillan in recent Beeb drama We’ll Take Manhattan) taking the reins.

Gillan last week wrapped a three-year stint as The Doctor’s companion – and promised that her character’s exit will be “unexpected”, as well as emotional.

“I literally couldn’t read it without crying,” she confessed. “It was the most highly charged read-through I’ve ever experienced. But I couldn’t have asked for a better exit. I don’t think it’ll be what people expect.”

She also shared her thoughts on the prospect of a Doctor Who movie. “I think it would be great in a franchise-y sort of way. I’d look forward to sitting down and watching it.”

But would she get involved if made an offer? “Oh, who knows. I guess you can only cross that bridge when you come to it!"
